The Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) scandal involved the embezzlement of public money tied to the lease of islands and lagoons for tourism development. Ahmed Adeeb, who served as tourism minister and later vice president under President Abdulla Yameen, pleaded guilty to corruption and money-laundering charges and was sentenced to 20 years in prison in October 2020. Outgoing President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih granted clemency to Adeeb and former MMPRC managing director Abdulla Ziyath in November 2023, drawing criticism from Transparency Maldives and other anti-corruption advocates.
In September 2025, an anonymous X account published material identified by media outlets as a 2,973-page forensic report prepared by UK-based Faraday Forensics from an iPhone extraction conducted in 2015. Atoll Times reported that it referenced 81,167 messages, while other coverage described contacts, calendars, photographs and communications involving politicians, officials, judges, police officers and business figures. The leaker and former home minister Umar Naseer said the public version was incomplete or redacted; as of May 2026, no comprehensive official authentication of the entire dataset had been publicly reported. Subsequent reporting by Maldives Independent described alleged cash movements and requests for money, jobs and favours, but the leaked material was not conclusive proof without independent corroboration, court findings or official investigation.
