After the 2020 U.S. presidential election, Lou Dobbs and other Fox Corporation hosts promoted conspiracy theories alleging that Dominion Voting Systems and Smartmatic had helped rig the vote against Donald Trump. Smartmatic filed a $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit on February 4, 2021, naming Dobbs and two other Fox program hosts; the company said their broadcasts falsely portrayed it as part of an international election-fraud conspiracy. The programs later aired video retractions after Smartmatic sent a demand letter, although the hosts did not personally issue retractions.
Dominion’s separate defamation case against Fox News named Dobbs among the hosts who had broadcast false statements about the voting-machine company. Fox settled that case for $787.5 million and acknowledged that the broadcast claims were false, creating one of the largest payouts in U.S. media-defamation history. Dobbs’s Fox Business program was canceled on February 5, 2021; reporting cited both the legal crisis and advertiser reluctance. In December 2021, Venezuelan businessman Majed Khalil also sued Dobbs, Fox News, and Sidney Powell for $250 million over claims that he helped rig voting machines; Dobbs and Fox reached a confidential settlement with Khalil in April 2023.
