On 8 August 2023, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) accidentally published a document on the WhatDoTheyKnow website while responding to a freedom of information request. According to PSNI assistant chief constable Chris Todd, the file contained the surnames, initials, ranks or grades, locations, and departments of all PSNI employees. The document was publicly accessible for approximately two hours from about 14:30 before being removed, and the PSNI apologised for the disclosure.
The breach exposed personnel information at a particularly sensitive security environment. On 10 August, Chief Constable Simon Byrne said dissident republicans claimed to possess copies of the material and that it had circulated on WhatsApp. The Police Federation of Northern Ireland demanded an urgent inquiry, while Policing Board representative Mike Nesbitt sought an emergency meeting and Alliance leader Naomi Long called the scale of the incident profoundly concerning. The episode was one of two PSNI data-security failures reported in 2023; a separate 6 July theft from a private vehicle near Newtownabbey involved a police laptop and radio and affected about 200 officers and staff.
