Microsoft’s legacy Support Diagnostic Tool contained a remote-code-execution vulnerability later named Follina. Security researchers at Nao Sec widely disclosed the issue on May 27, 2022, after malicious Microsoft Office documents were observed abusing document-template functionality to contact a remote server and invoke MSDT. The exploit could run PowerShell code without an explicit warning to the user, turning a Windows support component into an attack path.
Microsoft assigned the issue CVE-2022-30190 on May 30, 2022, and initially advised users to disable MSDT through a Windows Registry workaround. The source reports exploitation against computers in Russia and Belarus beginning in April 2022, and suspected use by Chinese state-linked actors against the Tibetan government in exile in India. Microsoft issued a security patch in its June 2022 updates. A separate MSDT path-traversal vulnerability, DogWalk, first reported by Mitja Kolsek in January 2020, was patched in August 2022 after Microsoft initially did not treat it as a security issue. Microsoft later deprecated the legacy platform, replacing it with Get Help and planning its full removal in 2025.
