In November 2019, transplant surgeon Nizam Mamode raised safety concerns about the renal transplant service at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), prompting an internal review. In May 2020, GOSH terminated his honorary post after the review identified “matters of concern” relating to his own conduct, and he was restricted from practicing at the Evelina Children’s Hospital. Mamode denied the allegations. A separate investigation by Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT) concluded that there was evidence of “widespread bullying and intimidation” by Mamode.
Mamode resigned from GSTT in December 2021, saying the trust had not provided a formal reason for his exclusion from the children’s hospital and had denied him an appeal; his employment ended in March 2022. In 2024, an employment tribunal found that GSTT had acted inappropriately and ruled that his complaint of constructive unfair dismissal was well-founded and succeeded. The ruling established an employment-law consequence for the trust, while the source records no final finding that Mamode’s disputed conduct allegations were proven.
