On 8 August 2023, the Police Service of Northern Ireland accidentally published a document on the WhatDoTheyKnow freedom-of-information website. The material exposed the surnames, initials, ranks or grades, locations, and departments of all PSNI employees. It remained publicly accessible for approximately two hours from about 14:30 before being removed. Assistant Chief Constable Chris Todd confirmed the scope of the disclosure, and the PSNI apologised for the error.
The breach carried heightened risks because the identities and workplaces of police personnel in Northern Ireland can be sensitive security information. On 10 August, Chief Constable Simon Byrne said dissident republicans had claimed to possess copies of the data and that it was circulating on WhatsApp. The Police Federation of Northern Ireland called for an urgent inquiry, while Policing Board representative Mike Nesbitt sought an urgent meeting and Alliance leader Naomi Long described the scale as profoundly concerning. The episode followed a separate 6 July theft near Newtownabbey of documents, a police-issued laptop, and a radio from a private vehicle, affecting about 200 officers and staff.
