Gitea originated in November 2016 as a fork of Gogs after developers objected to the governance risks of a project whose repository was controlled by a single maintainer. The community-driven fork released version 1.0 in December 2016, positioning itself as an open-source alternative for hosting Git repositories, code review, issue tracking, continuous integration, and related development tools.
In October 2022, maintainers Lunny Xiao and Matti Ranta founded Gitea Limited to provide hosted services using specialized closed-source versions of Gitea. This divided the project’s supported variants between the company’s installation and the original MIT-licensed version. Codeberg, then a major Gitea user, responded by creating Forgejo, demonstrating how governance and licensing decisions can fracture open-source infrastructure. The source documents the split and resulting fork but does not identify a court ruling, regulator finding, or financial penalty.
